GLASS DESIGN BENCH COMPOSITION

2015

Bespoke project

THE CONCEPT

The composition of bespoke layered glass benches represents a functional design created using an unusual technique. Crafting layered glass benches for the University of Latvia was a journey of merging art with functionality. Infusing a touch of light and a hazy atmosphere, he aimed to seamlessly integrate the design of these benches into the building's interior.

Art designer Ernest Vitin created both the benches' form and layout by combining the object's practical aspects with the building's architectonics. The 'naturalness' of the Nature Centre is conveyed through the irregular and harmonious layout of the benches. The DNA structure on the façade of the building is represented in a slight yet comfortable deformation in the form of one bench.

The shape of these layered glass benches and their layout at the site were designed by Ernest Vitin after consultations with the principal architect. The primary purpose was to create these objects for everyday practical use - sitting, lying, leaning against, while embedding artistic value.

The bench composition was a finalist in the bespoke furniture category, LDS Design Award 2017.

THE PROCESS

Therefore, the form of the benches was designed to be pure and classic with slight yet comfortable deformations. They are made of 10mm thick, industrially treated sheets of glass put together by hand.

In creating the glass parts for the benches, we used a technology different from the usual one. The glass sheets were tempered and laminated. Modern CNC machines, such as the Waterjet cutter and the CNC grinding and polishing machine, were put to use to achieve the smooth, matte look.

The artist chose industrial instead of hand treatment to obtain the clean, constructive forms visible in the building. The form of the benches was designed to be pure and classic, with slight yet comfortable deformations. They are made of 10mm thick, industrially treated sheets of glass put together by hand.

The use of the layered glass technique has led to a practical design that weighs many thousands of kilograms yet looks light, hazy, and romantic.
